Mr. Gabriel S. Singson, former Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippine central bank, is now Chairman and President of JG Summit Capital Markets Corp. He is also Chairman of Great Pacific Life Assurance Corp., Chairman Emeritus of Philippine Airlines, Senior Adviser and Director of JG Summit Holdings, and Director of United Industrial Corp. (Singapore) Mr. Singson joined the Philippine central bank in 1955 and served continuously until 1999, except in 1967-1968 when he acted as the first Filipino Counsel in ADB, and in 1992-1993, when he was president of the Philippine National Bank. In July 1993, he was appointed the first Governor of the BSP, and the first Chairman of the Monetary Board. He was Governor of the IMF for the Philippines and Alternate Governor of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the ADB for 1993-1999. In 1995, he was Chairman of the South East Asian Central Banksˇ¦ Board of Governors. In 1996 and again in 1997, Mr. Singson was selected by Asiamoney, a major regional magazine, as Central Bank Governor of the Year. He was especially cited for his steady control of the monetary policy against difficult odds.
